The leader of the Rally for Justice and Equality in Chad (RAJET), Ordjei Abderahim Chaha, has issued a passionate plea to President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, urging clemency for imprisoned opposition figures linked to the former GCAP and the Transformers Party.

In an impassioned open letter, Chaha emphasizes that detaining these activists is severely undermining Chad’s democratic reputation and the integrity of its justice system. He argues that embracing opposition dissent is not a sign of weakness but a hallmark of political maturity and a cornerstone of liberal democracy.

« Tolerating opposition is the ultimate testament to a nation’s democratic resilience, » Chaha writes. He describes opposition as the spice that enriches democracy, injecting vitality and freedom into the political process. Without it, he warns, democracy risks fading into « cold ashes, » paving the way for authoritarianism.

He stresses that national dialogue is the only path to reconciliation, asserting that imprisoned leaders are not adversaries of peace but advocates for progress. « True dialogue is where the light of peace and development is born, » he states, urging the president to reject divisive influences attempting to sway decision-making with false narratives.

The RAJET president cautions against harboring distrust or listening to « ill-intentioned voices » that fuel discord. He condemns the spread of misinformation, labeling those responsible as « grave-diggers of the Republic » who jeopardize national cohesion.

His final appeal is clear: immediate release of all detained opposition figures to allow them to participate in dialogue and help heal the nation’s deep divisions.
