Chad security minister urges united action against intercommunal violence

Under the leadership of Senate President Dr. Haroun Kabadi, the Upper House of Parliament convened a plenary session this Monday, June 1, 2026, to address pressing security challenges facing Chadian citizens.

Addressing senators’ concerns about escalating intercommunal violence and internal security threats, Public Security and Immigration Minister General Ali Ahmat Aghabache outlined concrete responses while detailing government initiatives to restore lasting peace and strengthen social cohesion.

During the session, marked by in-depth analysis and practical proposals from senators, multiple security concerns in specific provinces were raised. Lawmakers emphasized strengthening state presence in vulnerable areas, enhancing conflict prevention mechanisms, and bolstering operational capacities of defense and internal security forces.

In a candid assessment of the national security landscape, Minister Ali Ahmat Aghabache presented sobering statistics to the Upper House. Between 2024 and 2025, intercommunal conflicts resulted in 318 deaths and 3,015 injuries nationwide, alongside significant material damage affecting numerous communities.

The Minister highlighted how these figures reflect the scale of a crisis straining social cohesion, destabilizing territories, and hindering public development efforts.

In response to this daunting reality, the government has launched a series of measures to enhance population security and prevent escalation of communal tensions. Key initiatives include intensified patrols in high-risk zones, improved mobility of security forces through new equipment such as motorcycles, and recruitment of 1,000 police officers and 1,000 gendarmes to reinforce national security coverage.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening security forces’ proximity to citizens, the Minister emphasized enhancing surveillance in sensitive areas and ensuring rapid intervention at the first signs of tension. While acknowledging senators’ valuable contributions, General Ali Ahmat Aghabache stressed that combating intercommunal violence requires a holistic approach integrating security measures, community dialogue, local mediation, and public awareness campaigns. He cautioned that relying solely on security forces would prove insufficient without active participation from all social, administrative, traditional, and religious stakeholders.

This plenary session illuminated the persistent security challenges Chad faces while reaffirming national institutions’ shared determination to preserve peace, reinforce national unity, and guarantee citizen safety across the entire territory.
