Constitutional Council’s refusal to rule on Ousmane Sonko status sparks FDR backlash
The Conseil Constitutionnel has officially declined to issue a ruling regarding the parliamentary status of Ousmane Sonko, who currently serves as a high-ranking official within the state hierarchy. This judicial stance was met with immediate criticism from the Front pour la Défense de la Démocratie et de la République (FDR). In a formal statement, the coalition noted the Council’s declaration of incompetence but maintained that this legal withdrawal does nothing to rectify what they describe as a state of “forfeiture.”
FDR denounces ongoing illegality
According to the FDR, the current situation remains fundamentally illegal despite the Council’s decision. The group argues that every citizen has a moral obligation to resist this state of affairs, which they perceive as a violation of ethical standards and the public interest. The coalition insists that the Council’s inability to intervene does not validate the current circumstances, which they view as a threat to the common good.
A call for a broad democratic front
Looking forward, the FDR Leadership Conference has announced its intention to launch several legal and political initiatives. Their goal is to establish what they term a “democratic alternative” while remaining within the framework of national laws. To achieve this, the FDR is reaching out to various sectors of society to build a unified opposition.
The coalition is urging the following groups to unite and form a cohesive front:
- Political organizations
- Civil society groups
- Labor unions
- The nation’s youth
By mobilizing these diverse forces, the FDR aims to challenge the current political climate and uphold democratic principles following the Council’s refusal to adjudicate on the matter involving Ousmane Sonko.
