Deadly jihadist raids leave over 50 soldiers and VDP dead in Burkina Faso
On July 4th, Burkina Faso witnessed a series of coordinated terror attacks that resulted in the deaths of at least 50 soldiers and Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP). The Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, claimed responsibility for the assaults that targeted multiple regions, including the north, northwest, and southwest of the country. Jihadist fighters also looted several military camps and seized weapons during the raids.
The deadliest attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, around 5 AM, when insurgents stormed the military camp in Di, located in the Sourou Province in the northwest. After intense firefights, the militants breached the camp’s defenses before retreating. According to local reports, this assault alone left 23 soldiers and 11 VDP members dead. The JNIM released a video shortly after, asserting they had observed 22 bodies of Burkinabè soldiers and VDP before withdrawing from the area.
In addition to the attack on Di, the jihadist group claimed responsibility for two further assaults in the southwest and central-west regions. In Dalan and Tiére, at least 18 soldiers were killed, and significant material damage was reported by witnesses. The same day, insurgents also targeted Thiou and Séguénéga in the northern part of the country, though no fatalities were recorded. However, civilians reported that several vehicles were set ablaze during the raids.
Despite the severity of the attacks, no official statements have been issued by the Burkinabè army or government regarding the incidents. Meanwhile, footage and claims from the JNIM continue to circulate on social media platforms, amplifying the impact of the violence beyond the battlefield.
