At least eight people perished and 42 sustained injuries following the explosion of an improvised explosive device. The blast occurred as a civilian passenger bus traversed the road connecting Bamako to Kayes in Mali’s western region. The incident unfolded on Monday along a strategic transportation route that has consistently faced armed violence. The public transport vehicle reportedly struck a mine while navigating this crucial artery linking the Malian capital to the country’s west.

Mamadou Kassambara, the communication officer for the national drivers’ union, verified the casualty figures on Tuesday, specifying that the victims were all civilian passengers aboard the coach. Meanwhile, Africa Corps, a Russian paramilitary group active in Mali, disseminated a different account via social media, reporting five fatalities and more than a dozen wounded. The group attributed responsibility for the attack to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), an organization with ties to Al-Qaeda.

This particular area of Malian territory remains a frequent target for armed assaults and improvised explosive devices. As recently as April, GSIM reportedly conducted several coordinated operations alongside a Tuareg-dominated rebel movement, according to local security sources.
