Formal closure of diplomatic mission

Upon their return, the twelve diplomats met with Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré. They handed over the national flag that flew over the Paris embassy, along with the keys to the diplomatic premises. The government has firmly denied rumors suggesting some diplomats sought asylum during their departure.

Diplomatic rupture takes effect

Burkina Faso announced the severing of ties with France on June 26. In line with the principle of reciprocity, French diplomats left Ouagadougou in early July, while their Burkinabè counterparts were required to leave France by July 6. Authorities justified the decision by citing what they describe as France’s « unrelenting activism » against Burkina Faso’s national interests. Paris, in turn, condemned the move as « hostile and baseless. »

Years of strained relations

Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré took power in September 2022, Burkina Faso has steadily distanced itself from its former ally, France. Following the withdrawal of French troops from the country, Ouagadougou has forged stronger partnerships with alternative allies, including Russia, Turkey, and Iran.
