Cécile Abadie, the European Union’s Ambassador to Gabon, met with Libreville’s mayor, Eugène Mba, on June 22, 2026. This meeting was organized to reinforce the ties between the Gabonese capital and the EU, particularly as local authorities are increasingly tasked with implementing development policies. The two officials discussed collaborative opportunities aimed at supporting Libreville’s modernization efforts and achieving sustainable improvements in residents’ living conditions.

Throughout the discussions, the mayor detailed the primary objectives of his municipal administration, highlighting the urgent need to diversify funding sources for local governments. He also stressed the significance of international cooperation. Eugène Mba reiterated his dedication to enhancing decentralized cooperation to support projects in several key sectors, which would in turn make the city more attractive to technical and financial partners.

The EU embassy: central to institutional connection

As the European Union’s representative in Gabon, Cécile Abadie confirmed her institution’s commitment to sustaining a close dialogue with Libreville’s municipal authorities. The Ambassador outlined the EU’s current strategic priorities, emphasizing that evolving global circumstances require continuous adjustments to cooperation mechanisms. The EU intends to further its discussions with the municipality to pinpoint areas of intervention that address local priorities and meet the population’s needs. This approach underscores the crucial role of the European diplomatic mission in fostering effective partnerships.

Waste management, a major challenge for Libreville, was also a key point of discussion. Both parties acknowledged the importance of exploring new avenues to bolster the municipality’s initiatives in this strategic field. The EU is already collaborating with Gabonese authorities on the decommissioning of the Mindoube site and the construction of a household waste-to-energy plant. This meeting highlights a shared commitment to strengthening the relationship between the City of Libreville and the European Union.
