Gabon advances marine spatial planning with public consultations

Gabon is taking decisive steps to implement its National Marine Spatial Plan through nationwide public consultations. The initiative, led by the Ministry of the Blue Economy, aims to engage coastal communities in shaping the future of marine resource management.

Teams from the ministry have been traveling across key regions, including Port-Gentil, to discuss the project’s objectives with local stakeholders. Fishermen, fishmongers, and seafood processors are actively participating in these discussions, ensuring their voices are heard in the planning process.

The consultations also highlight Gabon’s commitment to conservation through innovation. Through the Blue Bonds initiative, the country has set a global benchmark for financing marine ecosystem protection while supporting sustainable livelihoods.

Balancing protection and development

The marine spatial plan is designed to safeguard critical habitats such as mangroves while maintaining access to resources for traditional fishing communities. By the 19th of July, experts will finalize the identification of traditional fishing zones, migratory corridors, and climate-resilient areas in the Estuaire, Nyanga, and Ogooué-Maritime provinces.

The finalized plan will then be submitted for approval by decision-making bodies, ensuring a collaborative and transparent approach to marine governance.
