The President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, took center stage at the National Assembly in Libreville on Monday, June 15, 2026, to unveil an ambitious bid: hosting the African Union (AU) Summit in 2027. This declaration represents a pivotal moment in the country’s strategy to elevate its profile on the African continent.

Speaking before the Congress convened at the Palais Léon Mba, the head of state framed this candidacy as a deliberate move to amplify Gabon’s international presence through proactive diplomacy and a renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation.

Diplomatic excellence as a foundation for global influence

In his address, the President underscored the progress made over the past three years, highlighting Gabon’s strengthened voice on critical global issues such as peace, security, sustainable development, and climate action.

The push for AU Summit hosting rights is not just about prestige—it signals a broader ambition to position Gabon as a key player in African affairs. For the administration, this bid is a natural extension of its vision to reposition the nation as a central hub for continental decision-making.

Revitalizing diplomacy from the ground up

Yet, projecting strength abroad begins with strengthening the foundation at home. The President candidly addressed the challenges faced by Gabon’s diplomatic and consular missions prior to August 2023, describing the working conditions as untenable for state agents stationed overseas.

To turn the tide, the government implemented sweeping reforms, most notably a significant increase in diplomatic compensation. « We substantially raised salaries for ambassadors and defense attachés, not only to improve their living standards but, more importantly, to equip them to fulfill their missions effectively, » Oligui Nguema declared.

These measures are designed to revitalize diplomatic teams and enhance Gabon’s representation abroad, reinforcing its credibility and influence in regional and international forums.

With its 2027 AU Summit bid now officially on the table, Gabon is laying down a clear marker: it is ready to step into a leadership role on the African stage.
