Gabon’s digital leap: unveiling its inaugural data center
A significant milestone for Gabon’s digital future unfolded recently as President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema officially inaugurated the nation’s inaugural data center. Located within the Nkok Special Economic Zone, this critical infrastructure was brought to fruition by ST Digital Data Center Services. The inauguration ceremony was further distinguished by the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalization, and Innovation and ST Digital, aimed at providing robust support to Gabonese startups.
This dual strategic initiative is poised to significantly bolster local data hosting capabilities, enhance national cybersecurity measures, and accelerate Gabon’s overall digital transformation. Adhering to rigorous international benchmarks with its Tier III certification, this state-of-the-art facility is set to elevate national data storage capacities, facilitate advanced cloud computing services, and offer essential support to both government administrations and private enterprises. Crucially, it represents a foundational pillar for strengthening Gabon’s digital sovereignty. Through this pioneering endeavor, the head of state unequivocally demonstrates a firm commitment to guiding Gabon towards an empowered and independent digital landscape.
The collaborative agreement ensures that emerging tech companies will gain privileged access to a suite of professional services. Selected startups are set to benefit from a dedicated virtual machine, 120 GB of SSD storage, 8 GB of RAM, four virtual processors, a public IP address, an SSL certificate, comprehensive technical support, and advantageous preferential rates.
The Ministry will play a pivotal role in identifying eligible beneficiaries, actively promoting local data hosting, and spearheading awareness campaigns focused on cybersecurity best practices. Laïka Mba, the General Director of ST Digital, underscored the profound significance of this development, stating, ”Possessing a national data center in Gabon is far more than a technological triumph; it is a fundamental act of sovereignty.” She further elaborated, ”It provides the sacred assurance that our state secrets, national archives, public services, and the personal data of our citizens will no longer be reliant on foreign infrastructure.”
ST Digital is committed to ensuring the highest standards of data security and providing ongoing technical assistance. This public-private partnership is designed to cultivate the creation and hosting of innovative digital solutions entirely within Gabon, thereby fostering a more dynamic environment for innovation, job creation, and strategic investments across the nation.
