Goalless draw between Saint-Étienne and Nice leaves ligue 1 playoff wide open
Saint-Étienne – Nice (0-0) : un match nul et vierge qui préserve le suspense en barrage de Ligue 1
The playoff contenders, Saint-Étienne and Nice, concluded their first leg in a stalemate, a tightly contested affair for Ligue 1 promotion. The decisive match is set for Friday in Nice.
A truly goalless encounter unfolded in the first leg of the Ligue 1 promotion/relegation playoff. AS Saint-Étienne, who finished third in Ligue 2 this season, and OGC Nice, the 16th-placed team from Ligue 1, played to a 0-0 draw at Geoffroy-Guichard.
The majority of the excitement during the match seemed to emanate from the stands, as the fervent Saint-Étienne faithful, known as ‘Le Chaudron’, passionately supported their team’s ambition to return to the top flight. On the pitch, however, the action was notably subdued: a mere 11 shots were registered in total, with neither side managing to hit the target even once, despite promising attempts from Clauss (25th minute), Davitashvili (58th minute), and Boakye (60th minute).
This stalemate ultimately serves neither team particularly well. Saint-Étienne, in particular, missed a crucial opportunity to leverage their home crowd’s energy and gain a psychological edge over a somewhat vulnerable Nice squad, still reeling from their Coupe de France final defeat last Saturday. Nice, further hampered by the early departure of Bouaddi due to a head injury, struggled to offer much more in attack.
Consequently, everything now hinges on the return leg, scheduled for this Friday, May 29th, at the Allianz Riviera. The suspense will continue right up to the final whistle, as we await to see if Saint-Étienne will join Troyes and Le Mans in securing direct promotion to Ligue 1, or if Nice will successfully defend its place among France’s footballing elite.
