How Morocco strengthens its strategic role in the african union
The Kingdom of Morocco has significantly bolstered its strategic influence within the African Union since its historic return in 2017. Following extensive regional consultations across North Africa, the country secured multiple high-level positions across the organization’s key bodies and committees. This evolving dynamic underscores the growing recognition of Morocco’s pivotal role in continental governance, as well as its unwavering commitment to advancing the Union’s core priorities—including institutional reforms, transparent governance, financial sustainability, economic integration, and tackling development challenges.
Morocco’s diplomatic momentum has led to the acquisition of nine pivotal leadership roles, placing it at the forefront of its subregion in terms of elective representation. Among these responsibilities, the Kingdom will serve as Vice President of the ministerial committee overseeing African candidacies in the international system. Additionally, it has been named Vice President of the Contributions Committee, a critical body responsible for assessing member states’ financial contributions.
In specialized technical committees—essential for shaping shared policies—Morocco has been appointed to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, as well as the Economic Development, Tourism, Trade, Industry, and Mining Resources Committee. Beyond these roles, the Kingdom will lead the vice presidency of the Permanent Representatives Committee dedicated to institutional reforms and preside over the Subcommittee on Environmental Affairs. Its presence also extends to the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Democracy, and Governance.
Perhaps most notably, Morocco’s election to the board of the African Centre for Migration Studies Research empowers national experts to play an active role in shaping migration policies under the Union’s framework. This appointment reflects the trust placed in Morocco’s leadership, particularly under the vision of King Mohammed VI, whose approach to migration emphasizes humanitarian solidarity and shared responsibility. These nine strategic positions solidify Morocco’s dynamic influence and ongoing contribution to the African Union’s operations.
Morocco’s reintegration into the African Union on January 30, 2017—after a 33-year absence following its withdrawal from the Organization of African Unity in 1984—marked a decisive shift from a policy of disengagement to one of proactive engagement. This bold diplomatic move has yielded major successes, particularly in advancing the territorial integrity dossier. Morocco’s diplomacy has transformed the management of the Western Sahara issue from a reactive stance to an initiative-driven approach, effectively neutralizing adversarial maneuvers within Union circles.
This pragmatic strategy has positioned Morocco to defend its fundamental interests directly within the Union’s corridors of power. Over the past few years, this bold approach has facilitated a seamless reintegration process and accelerated the signing of strategic bilateral agreements with numerous African nations, paving the way for a new era of economic cooperation and continental cohesion.
