Côte d’Ivoire reaffirms unwavering support for Morocco’s Sahara sovereignty

During an official visit to Rabat, Côte d’Ivoire has once again expressed its firm backing for Morocco‘s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region. This position was clearly outlined in a joint communiqué following high-level talks between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Ivorian counterpart, Nialé Kaba.

Diplomatic partnership strengthens international backing

The Ivorian government has consistently aligned itself with Morocco’s stance, with Nialé Kaba emphasizing the depth of this support during the meeting. The two ministers reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to further enhance cooperation between their nations.

In a significant development, Côte d’Ivoire welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which recognizes Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most credible and serious foundation for a lasting solution to the regional dispute. This resolution has been hailed as a major step toward resolving the long-standing issue.

Nasser Bourita conveyed Morocco’s deep appreciation for Côte d’Ivoire’s steadfast position, describing it as a testament to the strong and enduring partnership between the two countries. The bilateral relationship is built on mutual trust and strengthened South-South cooperation.

The two nations also highlighted the strategic importance of their collaboration, with Côte d’Ivoire recalling its decision to open a consulate general in Laâyoune in 2020. This move underscored the robustness of their diplomatic and economic ties.

Shared vision for regional stability

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to fostering stability and development in the Maghreb and broader African region. Their discussions reflected a shared vision for enhancing regional security and economic integration.

Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara remains a cornerstone of its diplomatic efforts, with growing international recognition. The plan, which offers broad autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, continues to gain traction as the most viable path to a lasting resolution.
