Jëf-Jël party urges opposition deputies to challenge Ousmane Sonko’s seat at the Supreme Court
The Alliance Jëf-Jël, led by Talla Sylla, has officially responded to the Constitutional Council’s decision n° 5/C/2026, issued on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. This ruling follows a legal challenge initiated on June 1 by eighteen opposition deputies seeking to overturn the National Assembly Bureau’s May 24 decision, which integrated Ousmane Sonko as a member of parliament. As a political organization committed to the rule of law, Jëf-Jël reaffirmed its respect for judicial outcomes, noting that the Constitutional Council’s decrees are binding for all public authorities and administrative bodies.
However, the Jëf-Jël leadership provided several critical observations regarding the ruling to clarify the current legal landscape:
1. Incompetence is not a seal of constitutionality
Contrary to potential misinformation, the Constitutional Council did not validate the reinstatement of Ousmane Sonko. The “Sages” merely declared themselves incompetent to rule on the legality of the Bureau’s act. By retreating into the “comfort of incompetence,” the high court declined to settle the fundamental constitutional debate regarding the incompatibility and conditions of the parliamentary mandate.
2. A clear path toward the administrative judge
The Constitutional Council’s decision did not close the case; instead, it identified the appropriate legal venue. By qualifying the National Assembly Bureau’s move as an internal “administrative act”—since it does not directly involve the electoral process—the Council has signaled that the Administrative Chamber of the Supreme Court is the competent authority to hear this matter.
3. Continuing the legal struggle
Jëf-Jël maintains that the battle for institutional integrity must be fought in the courtroom rather than through political absenteeism or other means. The party believes that as long as the law remains the guide, the democratic process is preserved.
Consequently, Jëf-Jël is solemnly calling on the eighteen petitioning deputies to persevere and immediately file a recourse for “Abuse of Power” before the Supreme Court. The party asserts that these parliamentarians currently hold the necessary legal standing to lead this final effort for the dignity of the National Assembly, describing the defense of the Republic as a legal and political marathon.
The Alliance Jëf-Jël has pledged to remain vigilant and stand alongside all democrats in Sénégal who oppose institutional force.
