Delegates at the PPA-CI’s ordinary congress in Abidjan overwhelmingly re-elected Laurent Gbagbo as party leader. At 80, the former Ivorian president begins a fresh term heading the movement he established upon his return from the International Criminal Court.
The congress, held on May 14 at the Treichville Cultural Palace in Abidjan, saw nearly 3,000 party members cast their ballots in favor of Gbagbo’s re-election. The PPA-CI was founded in 2020 following his acquittal at the ICC of charges related to crimes against humanity stemming from the 2010-2011 post-election crisis.
Despite announcing in 2025 his intention to step back from official party duties while remaining politically active, Gbagbo heeded the calls of his supporters to continue leading the PPA-CI. The congress also served as a platform to outline the party’s plans to strengthen its internal organization and revitalize its grassroots structures.
Party leaders emphasized that Gbagbo’s renewed mandate is expected to facilitate a smooth transition toward a new generation of leadership within the PPA-CI.
