Le Mans promoted to Ligue 1 as Bastia relegated to Ligue 3

The LFP disciplinary board confirmed Wednesday evening the 2-0 victory of Le Mans over Bastia, sealing the Manceaux’s promotion to Ligue 1. Following crowd disturbances in the Corsican club’s stadium, Bastia faces two firm closed-door matches and one suspended fixture. No point deduction was applied despite prior warnings.

During the 34th matchday of Ligue 2, the referee Ruddy Buquet halted the Bastia-Le Mans game with seconds remaining, evacuating players from the pitch after smoke bombs and firecrackers rained down from the stands. The disciplinary committee reviewed the incident and, as expected, validated the score that had stood at the time of interruption.

The decision ensures Le Mans’ promotion to the top flight while consigning Bastia to Ligue 3—the professional tier set to replace the National next season. The disciplinary board emphasized that no point deduction was warranted since none of the players were struck by projectiles during the chaotic finale.

Bastia avoids point deduction despite disciplinary record

The Corsican outfit received a two-match closed-door sanction plus a suspended fixture, but escaped the potential one-point deduction threatened by league regulations. Bastia had narrowly avoided similar penalties just six months prior when a match against Red Star was abandoned after a smoke bomb landed on the pitch.

The disciplinary panel’s reasoning was clear: «Typically, we impose point deductions when players or officials are directly impacted by incidents. In this case, no match participant was hit by objects, so the sursis remained intact,» explained Sébastien Deneux, president of the LFP disciplinary board.
