Legal action lodged over touba remarks attributed to sonko

A formal complaint has been filed with the prosecutor’s office in Dakar, seeking legal action against the claims made by political figure Ousmane Sonko regarding supposed illicit funds entering Touba.

The filing, submitted by the Collectif des petits-fils de Serigne Touba, centers on statements allegedly made by Sonko during the inauguration of the PASTEF party headquarters. The group argues that his remarks undermine the moral and spiritual reputation of the holy city, which was founded on principles of integrity, justice, and religious adherence.

In their official correspondence dated July 14, 2026, the plaintiffs—led by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso—request an immediate investigation to clarify the context and evidence behind Sonko’s allegations. They demand his testimony to substantiate the claims and allow judicial authorities to assess their validity.

The complaint highlights concerns over potential legal violations, including defamation and the spread of false information, should the accusations prove unfounded. While no charges have been formally assigned yet, the plaintiffs insist on thorough scrutiny to determine if criminal proceedings are warranted.

The legal team has indicated they possess video recordings, transcripts, and media reports as supporting evidence to back their claims. Their goal is to ensure transparency and restore confidence in Touba’s long-standing reputation as a beacon of ethical and spiritual values.
