French prime minister’s visit to Morocco amid free speech debates
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu touched down in Rabat on July 15 for a two-day official visit, during which a series of bilateral agreements are set to be finalized. The trip also paves the way for an upcoming state visit by King Mohammed VI to France.
The delegation includes over a dozen ministers, such as Jean-Noël Barrot (Foreign Affairs) and Laurent Nuñez (Interior), who will ink deals spanning economic cooperation, judicial collaboration, and defense initiatives. Security concerns remain at the forefront of discussions, with French and Moroccan officials emphasizing the need to address regional instability in the Sahel and the looming threat of terrorism.
This diplomatic engagement marks Lecornu’s first overseas trip since assuming office—just a day prior, he was in Doha to convey France’s condolences following the passing of the former Qatari Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Relations between France and Morocco have faced occasional strains in recent years, particularly in 2021 and 2022, but this visit signals a renewed commitment to strengthening ties.
