LFP denies olympique lyonnais’ request to reschedule season opener

The French Professional Football League (LFP) has declined Olympique Lyonnais’ (OL) plea to reschedule their inaugural Ligue 1 fixture. This request was contingent on OL advancing to the UEFA Champions League playoff round, a crucial stage before the group phase.

To reach the prestigious Champions League group stage, the Lyon squad must first navigate the third preliminary round, with matches slated for August 4th or 5th (first leg) and August 11th or 12th (return leg). Should they succeed, they would then face the playoffs, the ultimate hurdle, with the first leg on August 18th or 19th and the decisive return leg on August 25th or 26th.

The core issue arises because the opening day of the Ligue 1 season is set for August 22nd, falling directly between the two legs of the potential Champions League playoff tie. It was precisely to mitigate this demanding fixture congestion that OL sought to defer their away match against Toulouse. The club believed that a less strenuous schedule would significantly enhance their prospects of securing a coveted spot in Europe’s premier club competition.

Lyon’s management had also underscored that OL’s participation in the Champions League would yield substantial benefits for French football as a whole, advocating for the broader national interest.

However, following a meeting this Monday, the LFP rejected the proposal. The league body reportedly determined that commencing the Ligue 1 season with a postponed match was undesirable, particularly as the entire championship is set to be broadcast on its new platform.

Barring any unforeseen calendar adjustments, if OL successfully reaches the Champions League playoffs, they will be compelled to play a European fixture, followed by their Ligue 1 away game in Toulouse, and then the return leg of their European playoff, all within an intense seven-day period.
