The al-Qaeda-affiliated armed group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), has released a new propaganda video. This footage graphically depicts the assault carried out on April 25 against the military camp and airport in Sévaré, a key location near Mopti in central Mali.
The attack on Sévaré was part of a series of meticulously coordinated offensives targeting several Malian cities. These operations were executed by JNIM jihadists in conjunction with the Tuareg separatists of the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA).
This recently unveiled propaganda material offers crucial insights into JNIM’s evolving strategic capabilities, according to analyst Bakary Sambe, who serves as the director of the Timbuktu Institute.
Bakary Sambe observed that JNIM has demonstrated a significant capacity to infiltrate urban areas and penetrate highly strategic zones, citing the Sévaré airport and military camp as prime examples. This capability, he noted, poses a considerable challenge to both the Malian army and its Russian allies.
The coordinated attacks launched in April led to several critical developments, including the recapture of the city of Kidal by separatist forces and the tragic assassination of Malian Defense Minister Sadio Camara in Kati, situated near Bamako.
Following these assaults, the Malian government reported that 16 individuals sustained injuries.
Sambe further explained that JNIM has successfully maneuvered Mali into a precarious state, one that is neither fully at peace nor entirely at war. Within this ambiguous environment, the group is deploying an increasingly aggressive strategy. He also highlighted the rise of influential figures like Bina Diarra, one of JNIM’s spokespersons, whose emergence helps solidify the group’s image as a legitimate political actor.
The timing of this propaganda video’s release is particularly noteworthy, coinciding with Malian authorities’ announcement of rewards for any information leading to the location or capture of JNIM leaders. This initiative underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to its counter-terrorism strategy against the group.
