Iyad Ag Ghaly: most-wanted figure in the Sahel conflict
The Malian government’s announcement follows the release of a national broadcast detailing the bounty. Iyad Ag Ghaly, a former Tuareg rebel leader who rose to prominence as the head of JNIM, stands accused of masterminding a decade of jihadist insurgencies across the Sahel. His name appears on United Nations sanctions lists, and he is sought by both U.S. authorities and the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Additional bounties target key insurgent commanders
Beyond Ag Ghaly, Bamako has set prices on the heads of six other militant leaders. Among them are Amadou Kouffa, a senior JNIM strategist, as well as Alghabass Ag Intalla and Bilal Ag Cherif, heads of the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA). Authorities allege these figures orchestrated and executed multiple lethal attacks against state forces and civilian targets.
Response to intensified militant offensives
The reward announcement comes weeks after coordinated assaults by JNIM and FLA affiliates targeted multiple military installations in central and northern Mali. These coordinated strikes marked a significant escalation in the conflict, resulting in the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara—a pivotal figure in the current military regime.
