Mali football: Tom Saintfiet leaves national team after tough period

Tom Saintfiet, the Belgian head coach of the Mali national football team, has stepped down from his position, just a few months after taking charge during a period of intense political and security turmoil in the country.

Since assuming the role in August 2024, Saintfiet has guided the team through 17 competitive matches, securing a commendable record with only two defeats in that span. His leadership saw the Mali national team, often referred to as the Aigles du Mali, advance to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), where they faced a narrow 1-0 loss to Senegal. However, his departure comes as Mali grapples with escalating security threats, including offensives by jihadist groups and Tuareg rebels.

In a heartfelt message shared on his Facebook account on April 27, 2024, Saintfiet expressed his gratitude while announcing the end of his tenure. « Today marks the conclusion of my mission as head coach of Mali’s senior national team. I leave with pride and commitment, despite the challenges we faced. It’s time for me to embrace a new challenge », he wrote.

Saintfiet’s legacy: resilience in difficult times

Saintfiet took over from Éric Chelle and led the team through one of the most turbulent periods in recent history. In his farewell statement, he emphasized the unifying power of football, particularly in times of crisis. « In these exceptionally difficult circumstances that Mali is enduring, my deepest thoughts go out to the Malian people and the nation as a whole. More than ever, I send a message of compassion, solidarity, and unity. Football is, above all, a sport that brings people together—a beacon of hope and peace for Mali », he shared.

The Mali Football Federation (FMF), represented by its president Mahazou dit Baba Cissé, publicly recognized Saintfiet’s contributions. The federation also announced an open call for applications to find his successor, underscoring the importance of continuity in leadership during such critical times.

Before his appointment in Mali, Saintfiet had been linked with the Ghana national team coaching position, though the role ultimately went to Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz. Now, as he transitions to new opportunities, Saintfiet leaves behind a team that showed remarkable resilience under his guidance, despite the broader challenges facing the nation.
