Mali journalist jailed after criticizing military rule at Bamako forum
Mali journalist detained following public criticism of ruling junta
A prominent Malian journalist has been jailed in Bamako after publicly criticizing the country’s military leadership during a regional media forum, raising concerns about press freedom in the West African nation.
Legal action follows public remarks
Chahana Takiou, editor-in-chief of the biweekly newspaper 22 Septembre, was summoned to appear before the cybercrime prosecutor in Bamako on Monday afternoon. His detention followed direct comments he made during the Panafrican Media Forum, held in Bamako from June 3 to 6, where he openly questioned the military government’s legitimacy and policies.
According to judicial sources, Takiou was remanded in custody under charges of undermining state credibility through the judicial system. His trial has been scheduled for July 27, according to official statements.
Family confirms detention as press freedom groups react
Family members confirmed to local sources that Takiou was taken into custody shortly after his court appearance. The arrest has sparked immediate criticism from press freedom advocates and professional media organizations in Mali.
Criticism at media forum sparks legal response
During a panel discussion moderated by Bamako prosecutor Idrissa Hamidou Touré, Takiou reportedly stated, “There is no peace dynamic in Mali. You arrest journalists and instead of judging them under press laws, you apply cybercrime legislation.”
The Maison de la Presse, Mali’s leading press advocacy group, issued a statement expressing “deep concern and misunderstanding” over the journalist’s incarceration. The organization condemned the detention as an “alarming violation of press freedom and freedom of expression”, warning that it tarnishes both the justice system and the country’s international reputation.
The statement emphasized that the use of cybercrime laws to prosecute journalists represents a serious threat to democratic values and called for the immediate release of Takiou.
