Morocco is actively participating in the second Political Conference on the crucial nexus of peace, security, and development, held from July 11 to 12 in Mombasa, Kenya.
This significant conference serves as a direct continuation of the inaugural Political Conference on the peace, security, and development nexus, which took place in Tangier from October 25 to 27, 2022. That initial gathering culminated in the landmark adoption of the Tangier Declaration, a document that firmly established an integrated African perspective on this vital interconnection. Its core principles advocate for synchronized public policies, strengthened collaborative partnerships, and the execution of tangible projects designed to foster sustainable peace, enhance security, and drive development across the African continent.
The Tangier Process has solidified its standing as the continent’s foremost dialogue platform, addressing the intricate interdependence between peace, security, and development throughout Africa. This influential initiative convenes key continental and international stakeholders committed to these objectives, including prominent entities such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nations Development Programme, the African Export-Import Bank, and the African Development Bank.
The primary objective of this second conference is to meticulously assess the advancements made in realizing the goals outlined in the Tangier Declaration. Furthermore, it aims to pinpoint practical, operational strategies capable of further solidifying the critical link between peace, security, and development across the African landscape.
Discussions at the conference are structured across five distinct panels. These sessions delve into crucial topics such as the practical implementation of the Tangier Declaration via specific thematic projects, the transformative potential of artificial intelligence and youth-led innovations, the intricate relationship between security expenditures and broader development efforts, strategies for mobilizing essential funding for Nexus projects, and invaluable lessons gleaned from the African Union’s support for complex political transitions.
During these proceedings, the Moroccan delegation, spearheaded by Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to both the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, will underscore Morocco’s comprehensive vision. This vision advocates for an integrated approach to peace, security, and development, fundamentally anchored in strengthening partnerships and championing African-led solutions tailored to the continent’s unique priorities and realities.
