MSF urges global fund to maintain north kivu malaria priority in dr Congo

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) expresses profound concern over potential future funding reductions, fearing a severe deterioration of the health landscape in North Kivu. This region has already endured years of humanitarian crisis and persistent supply chain challenges, significantly compromising its healthcare infrastructure.
Stéphane Doyon, a program manager with MSF France, elaborated on the reasons behind this apprehension.
“Our primary worry,” Doyon explained, “is that should North Kivu be excluded from the Global Fund’s initiatives, the crucial medical treatments currently supplied by the Global Fund to various health facilities – distinct from those provided by MSF – would cease to reach the area. MSF lacks the capacity to assume the Global Fund’s role across an entire province, which would inevitably lead to an extremely critical situation.”
Doyon further stressed: “Malaria represents the leading cause for patient consultations at our health centers. Our absolute priority is to ensure the resumption of malaria support for North Kivu, a province profoundly impacted and currently one of the most critical health zones. We are witnessing ongoing epidemics of measles and cholera in North Kivu. The population has suffered immensely from conflict and desperately requires sustained external assistance.”
