N'Djamena court case: man accused of selling same plot to multiple buyers

On Monday, June 8, 2026, a marathon four-hour hearing unfolded at the N’Djamena Court of Appeals. A local resident faces allegations of selling a single plot of land to multiple buyers for sums exceeding 50 million francs CFA each, while also facing accusations of issuing death threats against the complainants.

Escalating tensions in the courtroom

During the proceedings, heated exchanges erupted between the defense team and the plaintiffs’ legal representatives. The latter demanded full reimbursement of the deposited funds along with additional compensation for damages incurred.

Defense claims illegal detention and legitimate ownership

The defense argued that their client had been unlawfully held in custody by intelligence services for over three months before being formally presented to judicial authorities. They maintained that the land in question legally belongs to their client, acting as a representative of his siblings, and insisted that the property dispute was fabricated by a paternal uncle who manipulated other family members to stake claims on the deceased brother’s estate. This alleged manipulation reportedly prompted multiple buyers to come forward demanding refunds.

Prosecution presents fraud allegations

The prosecution characterized the defendant’s actions as clear fraud, a claim rejected by the defense, which argued that no illegally obtained assets changed hands. Defense attorneys emphasized that the relevant articles of the Chadian penal code do not apply in this scenario. The prosecutor pushed for a conviction, emphasizing that accepting substantial sums from multiple individuals constitutes a punishable offense, and requested a 500,000 francs CFA fine.

Court adjourns for deliberation

Both parties presented compelling arguments as judicial deliberations continue. The court has postponed its final decision while the defendant remains in custody at the Klessoum detention center. Notably, an identical hearing took place on June 1 when the case was also sent back for further review.
