Nice faces decisive Ligue 1 playoff against Saint-Étienne after turbulent season

With a prefectural ban on supporters near the stadium and the unexpected absence of Ali Abdi due to international duties, Nice prepares for the most critical match of their season: the Ligue 1 playoff return against Saint-Étienne on Friday at 20:45.

From the early-season dream of a Champions League spot to the looming nightmare of relegation, Nice’s campaign has been a rollercoaster of emotions. A poor performance this Friday (20:45) could seal their fate in Ligue 2, a league they haven’t experienced in 24 years. The playoff return against Saint-Étienne—after a 0-0 first leg—is make-or-break, but the Gymnaste Club has rarely faced such a chaotic backdrop.

Mocked by most of their fans for months (except during the Coupe de France final last Friday, a 1-3 loss to Lens), the Aiglons will play behind closed doors at the Allianz Riviera. While this could ease the pressure, local authorities anticipate potential unrest if results don’t go their way.

A controversial prefectural ban

In an unprecedented move, authorities banned Nice supporters from entering the stadium area and surrounding businesses or training center two weeks after pitch invasions following the 0-0 draw against Metz. Such restrictions are common for away games but rare for home fixtures. The decision follows online threats against Tunisian defender Ali Abdi, who was notably absent from training on Thursday.

Abdi’s last-minute absence

The Tunisian international’s departure is the latest twist in a saga involving conflicting priorities. While Nice aimed to keep all key players for the final matches, the Tunisian Football Federation pressured him to join the national team, even booking three flights to North Africa since Saturday. Abdi ultimately left, citing visa issues for the U.S., though his entourage argued this jeopardized his World Cup preparation (June 11–July 19). The club later stated he remains determined to return and support the team on Friday evening.

Wahi steps up as Nice’s hope

With Elye Wahi unavailable for Tuesday’s action due to suspension, the Ivorian striker stayed behind to rest and refine his preparation. He reviewed Saint-Étienne’s defensive patterns with his personal staff and was reportedly motivated by a message from a prominent ultra leader following the Coupe de France final: “Save us, we’re counting on you.”

In case of a draw, Nice and Saint-Étienne will contest extra time before potential penalty shootouts.
