Olympic lyonnais’ request for ligue 1 match postponement denied by lfp

Olympique Lyonnais faces a demanding start to its European campaign. Before potentially securing a spot in the prestigious Champions League group stage, the club must first navigate a crucial third preliminary qualification round in early August. Should they advance, a potential play-off fixture looms just two weeks later, adding significant pressure to their early season schedule.

These critical play-off matches would unfortunately coincide with the commencement of the Ligue 1 season, where the team, led by Paulo Fonseca, is scheduled to face Toulouse. Recognizing this challenging overlap, Lyon’s management formally petitioned the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) via written correspondence. The club’s request underscored the broader benefit to French football, highlighting the importance of its clubs performing optimally on the continental stage.

The LFP, however, delivered a negative response, firmly declining to reschedule any Ligue 1 matches at the start of the championship. Consequently, Olympique Lyonnais will need to adapt to this packed fixture list should they successfully progress to the Champions League play-offs.
