Ousmane Sonko warns against drift in Senegal’s governance under Diomaye Faye

In a highly anticipated speech delivered this past Sunday in Sadio, Diourbel Region, Ousmane Sonko—leader of PASTEF-Les Patriotes—lashed out at the current administration’s handling of power, questioning its alignment with the movement’s founding principles.

Addressing a crowd of ardent supporters, Sonko revisited the events leading to the election of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in March 2024. He reminded the audience that it was his own candidacy that paved the way for Faye’s victory after his own electoral bid was barred from running.

« We propelled him to the highest office, only for him to stray from the vision we fought for, leaving the people’s hope in tatters, » Sonko declared, underscoring the growing disconnect between campaign promises and governance reality.

The opposition leader argued that the political project once presented to Senegalese citizens had gradually veered off course, referring to a lost hope among the population. He stressed the urgency of realigning policies with the original commitments made to the electorate.

Sonko also highlighted his pivotal role in the 2024 political shift, asserting that much of the groundwork for that historic transition was laid under his leadership. Looking ahead, he framed the 2026 and 2029 elections as critical milestones for reviving and advancing PASTEF’s political agenda.

His remarks come amid persistent speculation about the evolving dynamic between President Faye and his administration. As of now, no official response has emerged from the presidency regarding these claims.
