Political funds reform: sonko’s clash with president faye over legislative control
The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, has exposed a sharp disagreement with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the oversight of political funds, a reform central to their party’s electoral campaign promises. During a parliamentary session, Sonko disclosed his reservations about the legislative initiative spearheaded by Deputy Guy Marius Sagna to regulate these funds.
Sonko emphasized that the executive branch, rather than the National Assembly, should spearhead such critical legislation. He claimed to have personally alerted the President about this concern, stressing the urgency of government intervention in addressing the matter. However, President Faye responded cautiously, requesting additional time to assess the reform’s feasibility without providing a specific timeline.
In response to the President’s hesitation, Ousmane Sonko issued a firm warning: if decisive action is not taken promptly, he will proceed to submit the proposal directly to the Council of Ministers for approval. This stance underscores the growing governance tensions between Senegal’s two top leaders, highlighting a rift in their approach to policy execution and institutional roles.
