Last summer, PSG stayed largely under the radar in the transfer market, yet still made a crucial change. Gianluigi Donnarumma, after a strong second half of the season, left the club and was replaced by Lucas Chevalier, signed from LOSC Lille for approximately €40 million, excluding bonuses. The French goalkeeper was seen as the long-term number one for Paris, but after a disappointing start, he soon lost his spot to Matvey Safonov.

PSG has decided to keep Lucas Chevalier

The Russian international has remained the undisputed starter in goal for PSG ever since taking over from Lucas Chevalier, and it was Safonov who led the capital club to a second consecutive Champions League title. This situation might suggest Chevalier’s future at PSG is in doubt, but the club has decided to hold onto him this summer. A transfer of Lucas Chevalier is therefore not on the table, as he has apparently convinced the PSG coaching staff with his attitude and the signals he sent during the second half of the season.

A young goalkeeper arrives

At the same time, PSG is planning for the future in the goalkeeping department. Alessandro Longoni, an 18-year-old Italian goalkeeper, will join the club on a free transfer from AC Milan. He will fill the gap left by Renato Marin, who will be loaned for one season to CD Nacional, a club in the Portuguese top flight. In other words, while Matvey Safonov and Lucas Chevalier will again battle for the starting role at PSG next season, Alessandro Longoni and Renato Marin could eventually replace them in the years to come.
