Senegal’s parliament chief urges african unity and sovereignty at upa executive meeting

Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, warmly welcomed African parliamentary delegations to Dakar for the 85th session of the African Parliamentary Union Executive Committee, held June 3-4, 2026.
In his opening address, Sonko conveyed his deep satisfaction and pride in hosting representatives from parliaments across the continent. Extending a heartfelt greeting on behalf of Senegal’s Assembly and people, he welcomed participants with fraternal solidarity, highlighting the shared vision for Africa’s future.
Addressing the gathering, Sonko emphasized the urgent need for strengthened parliamentary cooperation amid pressing challenges. Africa, he noted, faces complex political, economic, and security hurdles that demand collective action and shared solutions.
« Today more than ever, parliamentary collaboration is essential for our continent to thrive, » Sonko declared. He underscored the necessity of African-driven solutions, built on the continent’s core values and aspirations, free from external interference.
The National Assembly leader reaffirmed Senegal’s commitment to panafrican ideals, stressing that Africa’s destiny must be shaped by its own people. He expressed hope that the session’s deliberations would advance continental integration and bolster shared ambitions among African nations.
Sonko concluded with a powerful call for unity, declaring, « Long live African parliamentary cooperation. Long live a united and sovereign Africa! »
