Senegal’s National Assembly Speaker discusses reforms with African Parliamentary Union leader

Against a backdrop of escalating challenges for African nations, Senegal’s National Assembly Speaker, Ousmane Sonko, engaged in high-level talks with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the African Parliamentary Union’s Executive Committee. The meeting centered on concrete proposals to bolster the UPA’s operational efficiency and alignment with the African Union’s strategic agenda.

On the sidelines of the 85th Executive Committee session of the African Parliamentary Union (UPA), Senegal’s National Assembly Speaker, Ousmane Sonko, held a bilateral meeting on June 4 with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, the organization’s Executive Committee Chair.

Key proposals for enhanced parliamentary cooperation

During the discussions, Sonko outlined strategic recommendations aimed at strengthening the UPA’s institutional framework. Central to his proposals was a call for structural reforms to amplify the union’s impact on shaping the continent’s political and institutional direction.

Sonko also underscored the critical need for greater synergy between UPA decisions and those of the African Union. He emphasized that such alignment could significantly enhance the coherence and effectiveness of inter-institutional collaboration across Africa.

The meeting took place as part of the broader agenda of the UPA’s 85th Executive Committee session, an event dedicated to fostering stronger parliamentary ties and collaborative governance across the continent.
