Senegal politics: Prime Minister Sonko challenges president over political funds

The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, publicly expressed his disagreement with the President on Friday, May 22, 2026, during a heated exchange at the National Assembly. Speaking during the session of parliamentary questions, Sonko stated that the Head of State had « made a mistake » regarding the management of political funds, a matter he described as highly sensitive.

« I do not agree with him on this issue, » Sonko declared, while expressing hope that the presidency would reconsider its stance. His remarks came as part of a broader debate on financial accountability and transparency in the use of public resources.

In his address to lawmakers, the Prime Minister emphasized that his political movement has long championed stricter oversight of political financing. « Since 2014, we have consistently raised this issue, » he noted. « It was a key part of our 2019 campaign promises, and despite the 2024 elections, the situation remains unchanged. »

Sonko clarified that his criticism was not directed at the existence of these special funds but rather their lack of proper regulation. « We have never called for their elimination, » he explained. « What we demand is transparency and accountability—similar to the systems in place in France. »

The Prime Minister also dismissed rumors suggesting that these funds might be transferred to the Prime Minister’s office. He pointed out that his administration already manages a fund exceeding one billion West African CFA francs and stressed that the debate centers on governance and public trust. « Many Senegalese believe these funds are used to buy loyalty, » he remarked, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring that « not a single franc remains unchecked. »
