Sénégal’s leaders urged to foster unity amidst political tensions

Speaking from Ziguinchor, Chérif Bouna Samsidine Aïdara expressed his belief that Sénégal is currently navigating a period of significant challenges. He advocated for a nationwide embrace of peace and resilience as fundamental values.

“We are witnessing situations at the very pinnacle of the state, a crisis unfolding within the highest echelons of government. Our leaders must be afforded the space to collaborate and reach mutual understanding,” he declared.

The spiritual leader underscored the critical need for both President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, the nation’s key executive figures, to adopt a steadfast posture of resilience to safeguard the country’s stability.

“The President of the Republic must demonstrate resilience. The Prime Minister, too, must be resilient. They ought to internalize the principles of the International Day of Peace to guide Sénégal along the most beneficial path,” he further elaborated.

According to Chérif Bouna Samsidine Aïdara, the prevailing atmosphere has generated considerable apprehension among the Senegalese populace.

“What we are living through and what we are hearing in the press does not inspire confidence. Senegalese citizens are afraid. We ardently wish for our country to avoid such turbulent situations at the highest levels of governance,” he affirmed.

Finally, he issued a direct appeal to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, urging them to prioritize dialogue and de-escalation for the ultimate benefit of the nation.
