Senegal’s parliament speaker urges major reforms for african parliamentary union
The Speaker of the National Assembly of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, held a pivotal meeting with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU), on June 4 during the 85th session of the executive body.
The gathering provided a platform for both leaders to assess the APU’s current operations and explore avenues for future enhancement, particularly amid Africa’s complex landscape of political, economic, and security challenges.
During the discussion, Ousmane Sonko underscored the urgent need to bolster the African Parliamentary Union’s effectiveness. He outlined bold reform proposals aimed at modernizing the institution’s operations and amplifying its role in shaping the continent’s key political and institutional directions.
The National Assembly leader also highlighted the critical importance of tighter alignment between APU recommendations and decisions made by the African Union. He argued that stronger synergy between the two bodies would enhance policy coherence across Africa and amplify the impact of initiatives aimed at continental development.
This meeting reflects ongoing efforts by African leaders to strengthen parliamentary cooperation frameworks and champion more efficient, people-centered continental governance.
