Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko addressing tougher laws on homosexuality

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has doubled down on his administration’s resolve to strengthen existing legislation against homosexuality in Senegal. His remarks come as part of an ongoing national debate about the enforcement of laws and the government’s policy direction on this highly sensitive matter.

Speaking about the legal framework, the head of government underscored the universal application of these laws, stressing their impersonal nature. He declared, « No one will be spared—especially not the powerful figures who often evade accountability. Laws are designed to apply equally, and that is what we intend to uphold. »

Sonko went further, attributing the current situation to past inaction. « This is not a new issue. Previous governments failed to address it effectively. Had they acted sooner, we wouldn’t be facing such a crisis today. »

He also addressed external criticism, particularly from Western partners. « There is no opposition to these laws within Senegal. The only dissenting voices come from abroad—especially from France. We refuse to take moral guidance from those who interfere in our affairs. »

Dismissing calls for a legislative pause, Sonko stated firmly, « Even African intellectuals who weigh in on this matter will find no room for delay. The process will not be halted. »
