Sonko slams judicial delays in Senegal government meeting

Government Council: Prime Minister Sonko Criticizes Slow Judicial Processes

During a high-level ministerial meeting held this Thursday, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko voiced strong dissatisfaction with the pace of judicial proceedings concerning alleged financial mismanagement cases.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came after Yassine Fall, the Minister of Justice, presented updates on ongoing cases. Sonko directly questioned the effectiveness of the judicial system, highlighting what he described as a troubling lack of progress in cases involving significant public funds.

Sonko expressed frustration over the perceived impunity in these matters, stating that critical cases appear to stall without tangible outcomes. He emphasized that such delays undermine public trust in government accountability and transparency.

Calls for Accountability and Faster Resolutions

In his intervention, the Prime Minister insisted on holding all responsible parties accountable, regardless of their current or past positions within the administration. He further criticized structural inefficiencies in the judicial chain, suggesting that some cases face deliberate or systemic delays.

Yassine Fall responded by assuring the council that her department is actively working to expedite proceedings. She acknowledged operational challenges but reiterated the judiciary’s commitment to pursuing cases where sufficient evidence exists.

Sonko remained unconvinced, urging immediate action and greater transparency in case management. He stressed that ensuring accountability is central to the government’s mandate and must be treated with urgency to restore public confidence.

The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming that judicial matters are a matter of national interest and must be handled with diligence to uphold institutional credibility.
