Football’s integrity is once again under the microscope after the French Football League (LFP) raised a red flag over suspicious betting activity tied to a Ligue 1 match involving OGC Nice’s Elye Wahi. The unusual patterns emerged shortly after the 0-0 draw against FC Metz on may 17, a result that forced Nice into a relegation playoff against AS Saint-Étienne.

The LFP’s swift response followed alerts from international betting monitoring partners, who flagged an abnormal surge in bets on Wahi receiving a yellow card during the match. While the card appeared justified on the pitch—given a foul by Metz’s Sadibou Sané—the timing of the wagering raised immediate concerns.

In response, the LFP took decisive action. On may 29, a formal complaint was filed against an unnamed individual, citing potential violations of sports corruption and organized fraud laws. The case was promptly forwarded to France’s Central Service for Racing and Gambling (Service Central des Courses et Jeux), the National Gaming Authority (Autorité Nationale des Jeux), and the French Football Federation (FFF).

The investigation centers on whether Wahi’s yellow card was deliberately earned to influence betting outcomes. While the card was seemingly accidental, the betting volume preceding the incident defies normal patterns. Similar cases in other leagues—such as Lucas Paquetá’s controversial yellow in England’s Premier League—have previously raised eyebrows but resulted only in minor sanctions.

The LFP has since refrained from public commentary, adhering to the confidentiality demands of law enforcement. However, the organization emphasized its unwavering commitment to upholding competition integrity, vowing to take firm action if evidence emerges of misconduct.

official LFP statement:

«Following the may 17 Ligue 1 match between OGC Nice and FC Metz, the LFP was alerted to irregular betting patterns linked to a yellow card issued to Elye Wahi. In line with its duty to protect competition integrity, the LFP immediately shared this information with the Central Service for Racing and Gambling, the National Gaming Authority, and the French Football Federation.

On may 29, a complaint was filed against an unknown party for potential sports corruption and organized fraud. At this stage, due to ongoing judicial proceedings and confidentiality requirements, the LFP will refrain from further public statements or disciplinary actions. However, it reserves the right to act as the investigation progresses.

The LFP reaffirms its full mobilization to safeguard the integrity of its competitions and will respond with the utmost severity to any behavior threatening that integrity.»
