Those inclined to critique Ousmane Sonko in Senegal often hesitate, largely due to the fervent activism of his supporters across social media platforms.

The political dynamic between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko, who recently assumed the role of President of the National Assembly, has cast a shadow over the serenity of democratic discourse in Senegal. Civil society leaders and journalists have expressed serious concerns regarding the intimidating atmosphere that has taken root. Individuals who voice criticism or opposition to Ousmane Sonko frequently find themselves subjected to intense smear campaigns across social media platforms, orchestrated by devoted members of Pastef, the ruling party.  

This climate fosters a form of self-censorship, driven by the apprehension of digital or even physical retaliation.

Furthermore, shortly after assuming his role as Prime Minister in early April 2024, Ousmane Sonko delivered stern warnings to media outlets, stating:

“We will no longer permit media organizations to publish whatever they wish about individuals, under the guise of so-called press freedom, without any credible sources.”
