Enhancing cooperation between Togo and the United States in local governance, decentralization, and social cohesion took center stage during a meeting between the Togolese Minister of Territorial Administration, Local Governance, and Customary Affairs and Kimberly M. McClure, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Lomé.

The American diplomat paid a courtesy visit on June 2, 2026, to explore shared priorities in territorial governance and local development. Key topics included progress in Togo’s decentralization process, capacity-building for local authorities, and strategies to strengthen social cohesion through the involvement of community leaders, traditional chiefs, and local stakeholders.

The Togolese minister outlined the country’s administrative structure and highlighted ongoing government reforms aimed at improving public service efficiency at the local level and bridging the gap between state services and citizens.

Strengthening local governance through collaboration

Kimberly M. McClure emphasized the U.S. Embassy’s keen interest in Togo’s local governance dynamics. She underscored America’s commitment to better understanding the challenges of decentralization to more effectively support initiatives in this area.
