Abidjan, 22 May 2026 — The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Gender Development Centre (GDC), in partnership with UN Women and specialized ECOWAS agencies, has officially endorsed a groundbreaking regional initiative focusing on gender equality, climate change, and the green economy. This strategic framework was validated during a high-level meeting held on 15 and 16 May at the ECOWAS Resident Representation in Abidjan.

Transforming policy into action for sustainable development

Over two days of intensive discussions, delegates finalized the program’s strategic document and mapped out a clear implementation roadmap. The initiative aims to bolster regional efforts to address the pressing priorities of member states in gender mainstreaming, climate resilience, and ecological transition. It also seeks to mobilize funding for the ECOWAS Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change, reinforcing commitments made at the highest levels.

Empowering women and youth through green transition

The GDC Director, Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, highlighted the dual nature of ecological transition—presenting both challenges and unprecedented opportunities for women and girls across West Africa. She emphasized how this program could serve as a catalyst for inclusive growth, ensuring no segment of society is left behind in the region’s sustainable development journey.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women’s Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, framed the initiative as a pivotal moment where political rhetoric gives way to tangible action. She underscored the program’s role in addressing intertwined climate and economic challenges through concrete, gender-responsive solutions.

Dr Kalilou Sylla, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, reinforced this vision by stressing the need for a truly inclusive green transition. He called for policies that create real economic opportunities for women and young people, ensuring their active participation in shaping a sustainable future for the region.

Next steps: Final adoption and regional rollout

The finalized program is slated for adoption during a working session scheduled from 29 June to 6 July 2026 in Lomé, Togo. Stakeholders anticipate this milestone will accelerate the initiative’s implementation across ECOWAS member states, driving measurable progress in gender equity and environmental sustainability.
