Demand for Fair Coverage in the MRC Leadership Dispute
Willy Mengue, a leading opponent of Maurice Kamto’s contested return as president of Cameroon’s Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC), has called on Equinoxe TV to ensure balanced reporting on the party’s internal divisions following Mamadou Mota’s appearance on the program “La vérité en face”.
In a strongly worded open letter addressed to the network’s CEO, Mengue emphasized the need for fairness in news coverage. He cited principles of journalistic integrity, truth-seeking, and the public’s right to information as key reasons for his request. The letter highlights concerns about the program’s one-sided presentation of the leadership crisis within the MRC.
«There is an urgent need to either organize a direct debate between the two factions or provide a substantial right of reply to the segment aired on Sunday, which addressed the contested return of Professor Maurice Kamto to the MRC leadership.» Mengue wrote. «While you granted the microphone to political ally Mamadou Mota to present his perspective, the same opportunity must be extended to the opposing voices I represent.»
During Sunday’s broadcast, Mamadou Mota defended Kamto’s return as a necessary step for the party’s future. However, Willy Mengue dismissed the move as “fraudulent” and accused the network of failing to uphold its reputation as Cameroon’s “people’s channel that goes beyond appearances.”
«Equinoxe TV, known for its commitment to transparency, must ensure its coverage of the MRC’s constitutional amendments—allegedly manipulated to facilitate Kamto’s return—remains fair and balanced. The Cameroonian public is watching this unfolding situation closely,» Mengue warned.
