The first leg of the Bundesliga promotion playoff delivered no winner on Thursday evening. Wolfsburg, currently 16th in the German top flight, was held to a goalless draw by Paderborn, who sit third in the 2. Bundesliga. Despite dominating proceedings, the Wolves must now travel to the second division side next Monday to secure their top-flight survival.

Just days after securing their playoff spot with a crucial 3-1 victory at Sankt Pauli, Wolfsburg faced a pivotal match at home against a Paderborn side riding an opposing wave of momentum. The visitors had secured third place in the 2. Bundesliga on the final matchday following a 2-0 win over Darmstadt and Hannover’s 3-3 draw with Nuremberg. Yet neither side could find a breakthrough in this first leg, leaving everything to play for in the second meeting.

Paderborn strikes early

The opening exchanges belonged to the underdogs. Paderborn pressed high, winning duels and launching rapid counters that troubled Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, who made two stunning saves from corners to keep his team in the game. However, after this scare, the home side gradually asserted their dominance.

Wolfsburg dominates but lacks cutting edge

Under the leadership of captain Christian Eriksen, Wolfsburg took control of the match, monopolizing possession and creating numerous chances. By halftime, the statistics were heavily in their favor: eight shots to Paderborn’s one. The second half saw relentless pressure from the Wolves, who camped in the visitors’ half, probing their defense with constant incursions into the box.

A frustrating evening for the Wolves

Despite amassing 63% possession and registering 15 shots, Wolfsburg failed to convert their dominance into goals. Paderborn, reduced to ten men in stoppage time following Jonah Sticker’s red card, clung on to secure a vital point. The result leaves the Bundesliga side facing a daunting second leg on Monday evening (20:30), while Paderborn will now play for promotion in front of their own fans.
