A strategic blow: africa corps’ malian struggles after Kidal’s recapture
« C’est un échec » : au Mali, la débâcle d’Africa Corps, vitrine militaire de Vladimir Poutine
The recent recapture of Kidal, a historic Touareg stronghold initially secured in 2023, represents a severe blow to Russian forces operating in Mali. This strategic reversal significantly undermines Africa Corps, Vladimir Poutine’s primary military display in Africa, causing its standing to falter and diminishing the Kremlin’s projection of power.
What unfolded on Sunday, April 26, in Kidal, northern Mali, resembled a profound military setback. A convoy of Africa Corps military pick-up trucks, the Russian armed contingent supporting the local junta, was observed hastily departing the area. Their departure was met with the triumphant cheers of Touareg rebels from the Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA). While this withdrawal reportedly occurred without direct conflict, a result of a negotiated agreement, it came at the cost of undeniable humiliation. According to France 24, the soldiers were disarmed and individually accounted for as they relinquished a vital strategic location.
As the Africa Corps withdrew, the jubilant rebels defiantly waved a French flag. This act served as a potent symbol of provocation and a sharp historical reference for the region. Djenabou Cissé, an associate researcher at the Fondation pour la recherche stratégique, highlighted the significance of this event, stating, “The only genuine strategic achievement the Russians facilitated since their arrival in Mali in 2021 was precisely the capture of Kidal, a historic Touareg stronghold.” Its recent fall, therefore, resounds as a clear and undeniable disavowal of their efforts.
