Algeria powers up Chad’s energy future with 40-megawatt plant
Algeria launches 40-megawatt power plant in N’Djamena to boost Chad’s electricity supply
The Algerian government has inaugurated a major energy project in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, marking a significant step toward addressing the country’s persistent electricity shortages. The 40-megawatt power plant, announced during a high-level ceremony on June 8, was described by officials as a strategic gift from Algeria to Chad, aimed at reinforcing the nation’s energy infrastructure.
The inauguration event drew key leaders from both nations, including Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Chad’s Prime Minister Allamaye Halina. Algerian authorities emphasized that the project was approved under the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, reflecting Algeria’s commitment to deepening economic ties and fostering development across Africa.
Cutting-edge technology to meet rising energy demands
The new power plant, constructed by Sonelgaz International, will operate using advanced gas turbine technology. Its primary goal is to alleviate the growing strain on Chad’s electricity grid, particularly in N’Djamena and surrounding areas. Chadian officials have repeatedly highlighted the urgent need for expanded energy production to meet rising residential, industrial, and commercial demands.
A broader vision for African energy cooperation
Algeria’s Prime Minister framed the project as part of a wider strategy to enhance African integration and shared development. He noted that the initiative aligns with commitments made during Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s official visit to Algeria in April 2026. Beyond this power plant, Algeria is actively engaged in multiple regional infrastructure ventures spanning transportation, telecommunications, and energy.
The Algerian government views energy investments as a cornerstone for fostering stability and economic growth across the continent. Once operational, the new facility is expected to stabilize Chad’s power supply, ensuring more reliable access to electricity for households and businesses alike.
