A high-level delegation from Algeria’s Sonelgaz has arrived in N’Djamena to initiate preparatory work for a new 40 MW thermal power plant in Chad. The initiative aligns with Algeria’s strategic vision to expand energy cooperation across Africa, particularly through South-South partnerships, as outlined during President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s discussions with Chadian counterparts.

The delegation, led by Sonelgaz-International CEO Yazid Djellouli, engaged in productive meetings with key Chadian officials. They met with the Director-General of Tchad-Elec, Chad’s national electricity utility, alongside Algeria’s Ambassador to Chad and senior representatives from Chad’s Ministry of Energy. Official discussions continued with Chad’s Minister of State for Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning and International Cooperation, Tahir Hamid Nguilin, and the Minister of Water and Energy, Passalé Kanabé Marcelin.

The meetings underscored the strategic significance of this project in deepening economic and energy ties between Algeria and Chad. A technical working session followed, focusing on critical project parameters including regulatory frameworks, priority milestones for the preparatory phase, and establishing joint coordination mechanisms between Algerian and Chadian teams.

The agenda covered the development of a unified roadmap and formation of bilateral task forces to ensure seamless collaboration among all stakeholders. Site inspections are scheduled to assess existing infrastructure, evaluate grid integration feasibility, and verify compliance with technical and regulatory standards before construction begins.

This initiative reflects both nations’ commitment to fostering a sustainable energy partnership. Sonelgaz’s involvement demonstrates Algeria’s dedication to supporting African development through knowledge transfer, technical capacity building, and practical solutions tailored to the continent’s growing energy demands.
