Bassirou Diomaye Faye to launch new political party in Senegal
The political landscape in Sénégal is set for a reshuffle as President Bassirou Diomaye Faye prepares to establish his own political party. This bold move signals a definitive break from his former ally, Ousmane Sonko, and the ruling Pastef party.
Aminata Touré, a senior advisor to the president, has been tasked with assembling a dedicated team to establish the new party. This development comes after months of growing tensions between Faye and Sonko, culminating in Faye’s dismissal from his role in May of this year—an event that underscored the widening rift between the two.
Until recently, Bassirou Diomaye Faye was a key member of Pastef, the party led by Ousmane Sonko, who also served as Prime Minister. Their falling out followed prolonged disagreements, which had simmered beneath the surface for some time before reaching a breaking point.
The timing of this political maneuver is particularly significant. Sénégal is currently grappling with the fallout from a financial scandal involving undisclosed debt accumulated under the previous administration. This crisis has only intensified the need for clarity and reform within the country’s governance structures.
With local elections scheduled for 2027, both leaders are now positioning themselves for a showdown. The outcome of these elections will serve as a critical indicator of their respective support bases and could redefine the political dynamics of Sénégal in the years to come.
