Bénin and Togo forge stronger partnership through Wadagni-Gnassingbé diplomacy

On June 3rd, Bénin’s Presidency announced a friendship and working visit as part of the first regional tour launched by the newly elected Béninese leader. Meanwhile, Togo’s Presidency confirmed that Romuald Wadagni’s arrival in Lomé was at the invitation of Faure Gnassingbé, Togo’s Prime Minister. One thing is clear: both nations are determined to redefine their relationship moving forward.

This visit took place within the framework of the deep-rooted historical ties—friendship, brotherhood, solidarity, and exemplary cooperation—binding Bénin and Togo. A joint statement released after the brief presidential meeting in Lomé emphasized the shared commitment of both governments to deepen their strategic partnership for the progress and prosperity of their citizens.

The two heads of state celebrated the centuries-old bonds of neighborliness, fraternity, and peaceful coexistence between their peoples. They reiterated their resolve to enhance cooperation across all shared priorities, from trade to security.

Faure Gnassingbé and Romuald Wadagni stressed the critical role of sustained political dialogue as a key tool for resolving disputes, preventing conflicts, and fostering peace, stability, and mutual trust in the region.

Reviewing economic ties, the leaders acknowledged the steady growth in trade exchanges between Bénin and Togo. They agreed to redouble efforts to boost border connectivity infrastructure, streamline cross-border trade, attract private investments, and expand economic synergies.

On security matters, both leaders expressed deep concern over the rising terrorist threats, violent extremism, and transnational organized crime plaguing West Africa. They pledged to strengthen bilateral security collaboration, including deeper intelligence sharing and tighter control over shared border areas.

At the end of his brief stay in Lomé, Romuald Wadagni extended an invitation to Faure Gnassingbé—West Africa’s longest-serving leader—to pay an official state visit to Bénin. The terms and timing of the trip will be finalized through diplomatic channels.
