Canaries Parliament honors Moroccan consul’s legacy

Astrid Pérez, President of the Canaries Parliament, commends Fatiha El Kamouri for her four-year tenure as Morocco’s consul, highlighting strengthened institutional ties between the Canaries and Morocco under Fernando Clavijo’s leadership.

Astrid Pérez, President of the Canaries Parliament, met this Wednesday with Fatiha El Kamouri, Morocco’s general consul to the Canary Islands, as her four-year term at the helm of the consular representation in the archipelago concluded. The meeting served to reflect on the deepened institutional relationship between Morocco and the Canary Islands.

During the encounter, Pérez expressed gratitude for El Kamouri’s dedicated service and underscored the pivotal role of dialogue and cooperation between the two institutions. She also wished her success in her next professional chapter.

Fatiha El Kamouri, of Sahrawi origin, arrived in the Canaries in 2022 after six years as Morocco’s consul in Bilbao, where she actively engaged in institutional relations and supported the Moroccan community residing in the islands.

Local sources in the Canaries emphasize the profound and positive impact of El Kamouri’s work in strengthening bilateral relations between the Canary Islands government—led by Fernando Clavijo—and Morocco. Her efforts have fostered mutual understanding and alignment with Spain’s national diplomacy.

The Canary Islands’ unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara reflects a strategic vision that prioritizes regional security, stability, and substantial economic and trade opportunities.

Beyond frequent visits to Morocco and the signing of multiple collaboration agreements, Clavijo’s leadership is exemplified by concrete actions, such as hosting a high-profile delegation from the Souss-Massa region in Las Palmas. The arrival of Karim Achengli and over 80 business representatives from the region underscores the shift from political discourse to tangible outcomes.

This institutional rapprochement signals the Canary Islands’ recognition as a natural partner in Morocco’s development. The archipelago has moved beyond past divisions to embrace a shared future rooted in mutual respect and collaboration.

Key sectors benefiting from this partnership include water desalination, infrastructure management, and technological research, areas where the Canaries’ expertise aligns with Morocco’s southern provinces’ needs.

Businesses from both regions are actively pursuing joint ventures, demonstrating that shared prosperity is the cornerstone of enduring peace. Fatiha El Kamouri’s efforts over the past years have been instrumental in making this vision a reality.
